About

Jonathan Lanman is a lecturer in anthropology within both the School of Anthropology and Keble College.  He has recently completed his DPhil in Anthropology at the University of Oxford, where he also completed an MSc with distinction.  He also holds a M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a B.A. in English from Southeast Missouri State University.  He is interested in applying the theories and tools of both social and cognitive anthropology to issues in the study of religion, morality, and commitment.  His recently completed DPhil thesis presented both descriptive and explanatory accounts of atheism in the West, including both “non-theism” (the lack of belief in the existence of supernatural agents) and “strong atheism” (the moral disapproval of and active stance against such beliefs).
